The 6-Day Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m), Africa’s highest mountain. Distance: 11 km (7 miles)Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours Habitat: Rainforest Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Machame Gate, where park registration is completed before entering Kilimanjaro National Park. The trail winds through a dense tropical rainforest filled with giant trees, colorful birds, and occasional sightings of black-and-white colobus monkeys. The path gradually ascends through rich vegetation and mist-covered forest, offering a spectacular introduction to the mountain. By late afternoon, you arrive at Machame Camp, where your crew prepares a hot meal and your first overnight stay on the mountain. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinne
Distance: 5 km (3 miles)Hiking Time: 4–6 Hours Habitat: Moorland After breakfast, the trail climbs steadily out of the rainforest into the dramatic heath and moorland zone. The scenery changes dramatically as giant heathers and volcanic rock formations replace dense forest. As you gain altitude, panoramic views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau begin to emerge. Distance: 10 km (6 miles)Hiking Time: 6–8 Hours Habitat: Semi-Desert This is one of the most important acclimatization days on the Machame Route. You ascend gradually to the famous Lava Tower at 4,600m, where many trekkers experience the effects of high altitude for the first time. After lunch near this volcanic landmark, the route descends to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly improves acclimatization and increases the likelihood of reaching the summit successfully. Barranco Camp is often considered one of the most beautiful campsites on Kilimanjaro, surrounded by giant senecio plants and towering cliffs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Distance: 9 km (5.6 miles)Hiking Time: 7–8 Hours Habitat: Alpine Desert The day begins with the exciting climb up the famous Barranco Wall, one of the highlights of the entire route. Although steep in appearance, the scramble is non-technical and offers incredible views across the mountain. After crossing ridges and valleys, the trail continues through Karanga Valley before reaching Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. Upon arrival, climbers enjoy an early dinner and rest before the midnight summit push. Temperatures can drop well below freezing, making proper preparation essential. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Distance: 17 km (10.5 miles)Hiking Time: 10–14 Hours Habitat: Arctic Zone to Moorland Around midnight, your summit ascent begins under a sky filled with stars. The climb follows steep switchbacks toward Stella Point (5,756m), where the first rays of sunrise illuminate the glaciers and volcanic landscape below. From here, a final gradual ascent leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Standing on the Roof of Africa is a life-changing achievement and the highlight of the entire Kilimanjaro experience. Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, climbers receive their official summit certificates before meeting their transfer vehicle back to Moshi.
